EVER WANTED TO GET SOMETHING OFF YOUR CHEST? FEEL A NEED TO CHALLENGE THE WAY WE THINK?
Then I'm hoping this will be the site for you...
Some people say that a "Butterfly Mind" is a bad thing. They use the term to suggest a mind that "flits" from one thing to another, and never really stays anywhere long enough to appreciate it. THAT'S NOT HOW I SEE IT!Yes! I admit that my thinking DOES tend to encompass a wide range of things, and that I can have far-ranging and diverse interests. True! My interests and thoughts can seem a little "random" at first! After all... Why does my mind fly from Archaeology, to Fashion? From people and societies, to Freudian Psychoanalysis? From the Pyramids, to Vikings, via Spanish Flamenco? What are the links? ARE there any links?O.K., so maybe my mind is a little like the metaphorical "butterfly". But that's NOT a bad thing! The butterfly moves with purpose. It lingers on flowers to drink its fill.It moves on, only when satiated. It takes with it a memory of the diverse pollens of a multitude of flowers.
Perhaps it's just me, but I really believe that nowadays, too many people DON'T think. Or, to be more precise, they do not think for themselves. Society spoon-feeds us with things - images, words, roles, lifestyles - things we are expected just to take at face value. We are not expected to ask questions. To read between the lines. We are not expected to want to stand out from the crowd, and to distinguish ourselves from others by our capacity to challenge the "norm" and upset the "status-quo" (and I'm not talking the rock band, here!).
Perhaps it IS just me... but I tend to think that modern society is all rather banal. We are told what we must conform to, and thus we follow the trend - be it in fashion, in ideology, music, art, literature, politics, career aspirations... ARE we sheep? REALLY? Do we HAVE to be sheep?
Now, I'm pretty sure that some of you MUST have memories of nights spent by the fire, or down the "Pub", or with University mates... oh, just fill in the scenario yourself!... O.K. you may have been slightly tipsy, perhaps bordering even on downright drunk... but, the words flowed easily, and it all made sense. Sparked by something that had truly caught your interest, and fired your imagination, you found yourself locked with others in some great philosophical, ethical, political, social... well, in debate, anyhow! It might only have been "Pub philosophy", but it sure got you thinking, and talking it over, well into the "wee small hours". That germ of an idea gained momentum, grew, blossomed. It spread. And, you didn't really even notice the fact that you were USING YOUR BRAIN - it didn't hurt, so it didn't really register. Besides, you were truly rather enjoying yourself!
So, be honest... When did that last happen? Recently? Or not? Was it just the folly of youth? And, if that's what you think it was, WHY?
By the way, all blogs included in this website are my own words and ideas. Some are, as yet, unpublished research. Others are poems that I have penned myself, mostly from 2009, onwards. They represent time, effort and hard work (well, sometimes!). Where I have drawn upon the work of another, or I have quoted directly, I have undertaken the common courtesy of annotating this fact. So, if you wish for any reason to draw upon my work, or to quote me (and you'd surely have to be desperate to wish to do so!), please follow the same rule. Do me a favour... DON'T plagiarise! I can't be responsible if my ideas are bad ones!
